Turkey

For a cosy holiday home with lots of character, book into one of the Terrace Houses, three 19th-century cottages in the hill town of Sirince, six miles from Ephesus. The little buildings have been carefully renovated with reclaimed marble basins, wooden sleigh beds and lovely lighting, including Chinese lanterns and wrought-iron chandeliers. A week in peak season costs £630, accommodation only, for a cottage sleeping up to four, with a local gift, for i-escape guests (i-escape.com/terracehouses.php ).

The Ettena Hotel on Cirali beach, with its enviable seafront position and eco-credentials, is an opportunity to enjoy a guilt-free holiday. Nuzzle up to nature in one of the 10 simple wooden chalets, and enjoy al-fresco breakfast buffets and dinners by candlelight (so as not to disturb the turtles that use the beach). Seven nights’ half-board, based on two sharing, cost £348 per person throughout July and August with Journey Anatolia (020 8761 5605; journeyanatolia.com ). Flights cost extra.

The city was founded by the Greek colonist coming from Argos nearly 9th BC and then inhabited by the immigrants from Miletus.

Ephesus remained the most important city of the Byzantine Empire in Asia (after Constantinople) in the 5th and 6th centuries. The emperor Constantine I rebuilt much of the city and erected a new public bath. In 406 John Chrysostom, archbishop of Constantinople, ordered the destruction of the Temple of Artemis. [16] Emperor Flavius Arcadius raised the level of the street between the theatre and the harbour. The basilica of St. John was built during the reign of emperor Justinian I in the sixth century.

The town was again partially destroyed by an earthquake in 614.

The importance of the city as a commercial centre declined as the harbour slowly filled with silt from the river (today, Küçük Menderes) despite repeated dredges during the city’s history.[17] (Today, the harbor is 5 kilometers inland). The loss of its harbor caused Ephesus to lose its access to the Aegean Sea, which was important for trade. People started leaving the lowland of the city for the surrounding hills. The ruins of the temples were used as building blocks for new homes. Marble sculptures were ground to powder to make lime for plaster.

Sackings by the Arabs first in the year 654-655 by caliph Muawiyah I, and later in 700 and 716 hastened the decline further.

When the Seljuk Turksconquered it in 1071-1100, it was a small village. The Byzantines resumed control in 1100 and changed the name of the town into Hagios Theologos. They kept control of the region until 1308. Crusaders, passing through, were surprised that there was only a small village, called Ayasalouk, where they had expected a bustling city with a large seaport. Even the temple of Artemis was completely forgotten by the local population.

This year we received four couples to the Terrace Houses for their honeymoons.. The most romantic room is

ofcourse Olive bedroom… Please note that, this bedroom is only 15 minutes away from the hearth of the civilisation, Ephesus ….

History..

The Terrace Houses of Ephesus, were used from the 1st century to 7th century AD, and then were abandoned. Around this time, after the devastating Arab raids and the continued silting up of the harbor, the remaining inhabitants of Ephesus moved to Ayasuluk hill (near the Basilica of St. John).

After being abandoned, the Terrace Houses gradually fell into decay. However, a number of them were filled with soil from landslips, which preserved them and their contents.

The houses at Ephesus are not inferior to those found at Pompeii and Herculaneum in terms of preservation and importance. Their decor and furnishings provide a great deal of information about the lifestyle of the Ephesian upper class in the Roman and Byzantine periods

How to get there.?

From Sirince village, during the peak season, minibusses leaves for Selcuk in avery half an hour till the evening.. It is 2.50 lira per person. From Selcuk , you will get another minibus for Ephesus..Only 5 minutes from central bus station.. Please note that, for ancient sights like Priene, Miletus, you can use this eficient service during the day…

When you came back from a long day full of culture, Terrace Cafe is the correct spot to write your diary while having your French coffee with Sibel’s lemon cake…
